Test-run part at my new job. Yeah, that part’s gonna cost $35?
Ok, make it go.
Whole new world. If any of y’all are involved in product development, you might appreciate what I’m saying. The hardest part of this? They do everything in INCHES.

Machining center like a Mazak, or old-school Bridgeport?

This one’s 100% old-school. CNC, but an old-school shop. Not a Mazak.

You might be surprised to learn how many machine shops still operate in inches. Regular old CNC stuff or do you have others like a Swiss lathe?

Regular old. I’ve spent my whole career in mm. The dimensions are fucking killing me. Gonna have to change that language posthaste.

No kidding. It’s a tough habit to break. Do they say “mil” also? As in the above would be 5 mil / rev?

AAAAGHGHGHGHGH
I just don’t understand that at all.
“Mil.”
...So, you mean millimeter?
“No, idiot. ‘Mil’ means thousands of an inch.”
...
...OK... ?

LOL LOL LOL LOL
It’s easier if you just go with it. I know how to use it but I don’t know what it means or where it came from. Confused the hell out of me for a while. It’s wooed though because it’s used for other things too, like plastic baggie thickness or latex/nitrile glove thickness.

Apparently I haven’t spent enough time with doctors and/or drug dealers.

What can I say? I guess I’m a Jack of all trades.

And I’ve obviously been in the wrong trades.

Like AMGtech said, it’s just been that way forever so people keep doing it. As a machinist, I pretty much just think in decimal units of the standard system.

This is so counterproductive.

Well, not generally. If you work in a field/market where metric is the norm, you can get machines that work in metric. But if you’re designing and manufacturing everything in-house, it doesn’t matter so much.

That’s what I need to learn.

But what are the right trades?
In all reality, I worked at a machine shop for a couple years in high school mostly doing QC stuff, but also cleaning product, shipping/packaging, and running mills keeping production up. We made very small semi-conductor and medical parts, many under an inch in length, pretty much all under a foot in length. Diameters were never more than .250” for tubing, and were usually well under .010" for solid stock. Everything was mil or thou’. Many things were packaged in plastic baggies before heading off to shipping. That’s where the baggie and mil knowledge comes in.
As for the gloves, I’ve spent my fair share of time in doctor’s offices after youthful shenanigans concluded with pained screaming rather than the expected excited yelling. Somehow, I’m just literate enough to read a box when I’m bored. Oh, and I use them at work constantly. Latex and cheap nitrile in 6 mil is almost instantly destroyed by solvent, whereas 8 mil is excellent for that, however warm and sweaty.

Drugs are probably the right trade.
Like, geriatric drugs.
Also, awesome stories. I pretty much grew up in machine shops. Getting to come back to that environment and combining it with my years of high-tech and material design experience makes me really happy.

Happiness can be a pretty good drug too. Although difficult to monetize for many.
